What is GCED?
Global Citizenship Education (GCED) is UNESCO’s response to the global challenges including human rights violations, inequality, and poverty. It works by empowering learners of all ages to understand that these are global, not local issues and to become active promoters of more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, secure and sustainable societies The objective of global citizenship education is to instill in learners the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to be able to contribute to a more inclusive, just and peaceful world and ultimately foster responsibility for global citizens. Hence, global citizenship education is meant to empower learners to engage and assume active roles, both locally and globally, to face and resolve global challenges and ultimately to become proactive contributors to a more just, peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, secure and sustainable world.

TWIYC.tw is a platform that brings people together in a meaningful way. It connects foreign volunteers with high school students in Taiwan, fostering valuable connections and opening doors to new perspectives. Recently, GCED Taiwan took part in TWIYC's flagship program and visited some schools to share important lessons about Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Here's a quick peek into the places they visited:
SDG 4 Education: Teacher Buyana visited Nei-Li Senior High School in Taoyuan City on April 12th. This particular goal, SDG 4, is all about ensuring quality education for all. It's amazing how education can shape our future!
SDG 5 Gender Equality: She later visited Yang-Mei Junior High School in Taoyuan, focusing on SDG 5, which is all about Gender Equality. This goal reminds us that everyone deserves equal opportunities, regardless of their gender.
SDG 5 Gender Equality: Teacher Buyana also visited Chu-pei Senior High School in Hsinchu City on April 7th, diving deeper into the important topic of Gender Equality.
GCED Taiwan's mission is to explore these significant global issues, such as education and gender equality, within the framework of the SDGs. During our classes, students examine examples from different countries to understand how these goals play out in various contexts. Take, for instance, Mongolia and Taiwan. These two places have unique stories when it comes to education and gender equality. Comparing them can help us see the diversity of challenges and solutions around the world.
In the end, TWIYC.tw and GCED Taiwan are all about building bridges, connecting people, and helping us understand how we can make the world a better place, one small step at a time. So, whether you're a student or a volunteer, you're part of something pretty special!
We Are Global Citizens - GCED Taiwan team had the opportunity to share our projects and introduce Global Citizenship Education to the participants of the “Mongolian President’s Scholar–2100" Scholarship Program. It's an incredible honor to mentor these promising young leaders of Mongolia as they prepare for the world's best universities. The program offers financial support for studying abroad and a preparatory program based on their academic achievements.
Excited to see what the future holds for these inspiring individuals!
The "We Are Global Citizens" team is excited to join the Earth Day celebration at the Yilan County Sustainable Development and Energy Education Expo. As a global citizenship educators, we're proud to be a part of this event that promotes sustainable development and environmental protection education.
At the Yilan Green Expo, we've been engaging with our young visitors in a variety of enjoyable activities that highlight the importance of taking care of our planet. Children have been painting the Earth, adding their creative touches to our beautiful blue planet. They've also been coloring the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) map, learning about the global goals that are guiding us towards a better future.
But Earth Day is not just about art; it's about understanding that environmental protection is everyone's responsibility as a global citizen. We've been playing board games and other interactive activities that teach children and their parents about the significance of safeguarding our environment.
One of the highlights of our activities is the opportunity for visitors of all ages to share their daily practices for protecting the environment and sustaining a green Earth. These valuable discussions emphasize that each one of us, regardless of our age, can make a positive impact by making eco-friendly choices in our daily lives.
As we celebrate Earth Day, let's remember that caring for our environment is a shared responsibility. The "We Are Global Citizens" team is proud to contribute to this mission and to inspire future generations to become stewards of our precious planet. Happy Earth Day!
GCED Taiwan recently conducted an educational workshop at Yilan Vocational High School, preparing selected students to assist a performing South African team during their stay in Taiwan for the Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival. The highlight of the workshop was the presence of Ms. Ayanda, a teacher from South Africa within the GCED team. Her contributions included introducing South African culture to the students, featuring captivating African mask painting and lively dance activities.
This cultural immersion session provided valuable insights into South African traditions and history, encouraging students to embrace cultural diversity and deepen their respect for others. The hands-on African mask painting activity engaged students in exploring cultural symbolism, while the dance activity celebrated the energy and rhythm of South African dance forms.
GCED Taiwan's efforts are molding a new generation of global citizens who appreciate diversity and are prepared to positively impact our interconnected world. Through initiatives like these, students become ambassadors of global citizenship, building bridges between cultures and contributing to a more harmonious world.
In a heartening collaboration supported by the Ministry of Education and the Yilan County Government, GCED Taiwan partnered with SiJi Elementary School and SanXing Junior High School to organize a transformative Climate Action Summer Camp in Yilan County. This two-day initiative aimed to educate and empower junior high school students, inspiring them to champion climate action and become responsible global citizens.
The camp's curriculum revolved around four key objectives: enhancing awareness of climate change, equipping students with knowledge and practical skills for sustainability, inspiring active climate action, and fostering global citizenship. Students received lectures and workshops from seven dedicated teachers hailing from Mongolia, Malaysia, Honduras, Burundi, South Africa, and Taiwan, providing a diverse and enriching learning experience.
Through engaging sessions, international teachers, and hands-on activities, students gained a comprehensive understanding of the climate crisis and explored solutions, from renewable energy to eco-friendly practices. This collaborative effort is paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future, one young environmental champion at a time.
GCED Taiwan took part in this conference as an International Counselor, responsible for guiding and supervising an assigned group of students throughout the 4-day camp. During this camp, students focused on learning about SDGs 1, 3, and 4, importantl goals for a better world.
In addition to our camp activities, we had the honor of attending the "Let's Do It! World Asia Conference 2023." Here, we met global leaders and experts to learn how we can make positive changes in the world. We also had the opportunity to discuss our project with BoST Mr. YM Raja Mazhar Mohar b Raja Tun Mohar and Executive Director Mr. Henry Teh Kok Kheng from the Malaysian Humanitarian Foundation.
Our group presented the project "Technology for Everyone," aiming to provide fair and inclusive education for all. We are proud to share that our proposal earned the 3rd place in the competition. At GCED Taiwan, we are dedicated to making the world a better place through education and understanding.
Three former GCED students, Chloe, Carolyn, and Alycia, who participated in the "We Are Global Citizens" workshop, have taken the lead in launching their inaugural "Move to SDGs" project. This initiative is specifically designed for junior high school students, aiming to ignite their passion for positive change.
Their project includes a two-day workshop where young students learn how to make the world a better place. They invited three special teachers from YilanSEEC to teach them about SDGs and Taiwan's efforts to protect the environment. They also had a special guest, an international teacher from BAC Youth Global, who talked about how SDGs are practiced in Burundi.
After the training, all the students wrote letters to their local government to make their voices heard. Chloe, Carolyn, and Alycia's "Move to SDGs" project is a shining example of young people working together to create a brighter future for everyone.
